Exercise Physiologist vs. Personal Trainer

Personal training

  • Involves a fitness professional involved in exercise prescription and instruction who teaches strength and conditioning exercises and techniques.
  • Measures strengths and weaknesses of clients with fitness assessments.
  • Sets goals and provides feedback and accountability to motivate clients.

Exercise physiology

  • Involves the identification of physiological mechanisms underlying physical activity.
  • The comprehensive delivery of treatment services concerned with the analysis, improvement, and maintenance of health and fitness.
  • Rehabilitation of heart disease and other chronic diseases and/or disabilities.
  • The professional guidance and counsel of athletes and others interested in athletics, sports training, and human adaptability to acute and chronic exercise.
  • Is using scientific studies and evidence to track and monitor to ensure individuals exercise in optimal training environments no matter what conditions, injuries or illnesses they may possess. An exercise physiologist is a trained educated professional that may specialize in many different areas of health, exercise and medicine.

I chose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology because I want to be involved in exercise in some form. It wasn’t until knee injury ended my basketball playing career that I knew I wanted to be able to influence people, specifically young athletes, and help them prevent this and other injuries. So I went to school and graduated with honors from Barry University and began my journey of becoming a strength and conditioning coach. My journey has had many ups and downs from training and mentoring under great individuals to training as many as thirty high school athletes by myself, keeping them focused and motivated. I have also worked with kids as young as 7 and people upwards of 65 years young. Now using this knowledge and passion I try to improve lifestyles and make everyone I come in contact with a lifelong exercise lover.
