A saying I have been hearing a lot lately “It is what it is” and I believe this is just a way for people to get out of giving their opinion on certain topics or issues, or some people may use this as a way of saying there is nothing that can be done about it.
If we truly think like this would anything have ever changed in history?
If we said “it is what it is” when talking about medical, education and technology 30 years ago we would not have advanced to the place we are today.
Maybe we should be saying “it isn’t what it is” and what I mean by that is that we need to challenge the norms of society and the normal expectations that are set upon ourselves. Let’s challenge ourselves to push beyond our own standards and beliefs that have been set for us. Challenging these beliefs and standards may start the change that we need in ourselves and society. Pushing yourself to reach for more has to be the standard we set ourselves too. Constantly demanding ourselves to grow, evolve and/or advance is base component for success.
I also believe that in today’s society we portray things to be more important that they need to be. That news article, social media post or new research study may be misleading you to believe something that really isn’t true or isn’t true to your beliefs. That is why I always say “why” and challenge these things that are here for us in society and life.
So next time you read that article or social media post don’t take it as the final or right answer and think to yourself “why”.
Thinking why can open your mind to the opposite side of the argument that may help you see from another person’s perspective. Seeing something from another’s perspective can give us a very short glimpse into the life of another. Living moments like this can help bring people together and we may all realize how lucky we are to have each other. We have to lean on each other as human beings and trust one another… not just people of the same religion we follow, political party we choose or the same color of our skin.
I believe this realization can all start from saying “it isn’t what it is” and challenging ourselves to say “why” especially when it’s hard to speak on certain topics and issues in society.
